Seoul Fireworks Festival Sent Convenience Store Sales Up 10x

We came to see the Seoul International Fireworks Festival.

First, we needed a good spot.

We looked around for a while and finally found one.

“This looks good.”

We spread out a mat and sat down.

Then we looked up at the sky.

We came to see the fireworks.

The sun was rising.

☀️ So We Wait

There’s still plenty of empty space around us.

Not many people are here yet.

We drink some coffee.

Scroll through our phones.

Lie down for a while.

And little by little, people start arriving.

The empty spaces begin to disappear.

Eventually, we get hungry.

“Should we get something to eat?”

We look around.

“There’s a restaurant over there.”

Maybe we could go.

……

But there are a lot more people now.

We look at our spot.

“You think this will still be here when we get back?”

……

Then we notice a convenience store nearby.

“Let’s just get something from there.”

🏪 One Person Goes

“I’ll go.”

One person gets up.

Immediately, the orders begin.

“Gimbap for me.”

“Cup noodles.”

“Get some water.”

“And a beer.”

……

“Wait.”

The phone comes out.

“Say all that again.”

A little while later, our designated shopper returns
carrying convenience-store bags in both hands.

We eat right there on the mat.

It’s still daylight.

📷 Now the Camera Comes Out

We set up the tripod.

Mount the camera.

Check the angle.

……

People keep arriving.

Most of the empty space we saw in the morning is gone.

People in front of us.

People behind us.

People on both sides.

Leave even a small gap, and someone quickly fills it.

Now, whenever someone stands up, they say the same thing.

“Watch our spot.”

To get water.

To pick up something we need.

And then someone stands up again.

“Where are you going?”

……

“Bathroom.”

We look at the crowd packed between us and wherever the bathroom is.

“You think you can make it there and back?”

……

“I have to.”

And off they go, disappearing into the crowd.

👀 We Got the Good Spot

Now the problem is leaving it.

Much later, our bathroom explorer finally returns.

They squeeze through the crowd,

find us again,

and drop onto the mat.

“Wow……”

“What?”

……

“There are so many people.”

They sit there for a moment.

Then someone checks the convenience-store bag.

“Any water left?”

“One bottle.”

……

“I’m not drinking it.”

We look at each other.

🌇 Finally, the Sky Gets Dark

More and more people start looking up.

We check the camera again.

Adjust the tripod.

We’ve been holding this spot since sunrise.

Finally, it’s almost time for it to pay off.

……

And then,

the first firework explodes across the night sky.

“Whoa!”

Everyone looks up at once.
